In October 2024, MOT South Africa held its fourth MOT Coaches’ Basic Education training of the year, welcoming a new group of MOT Coaches from schools in the Eastern Cape. This hands-on training provided educators, lecturers, and youth workers with tools and knowledge to run the MOT programme with their students.

Purpose of the Training

MOT coaches in an activity

The MOT Coaches’ Basic Education training had three main goals:

  1. Give participants a solid understanding of MOT’s life skills programme for young people.
  2. Build a strong connection to the MOT values.
  3. Prepare participants to guide young people not just through teaching, but by supporting their personal growth.

Highlights from the Training

One of the most popular activities was the “Life Shield” exercise. Each participant created a Life Shield that represented their goals, dreams, and personal interests, helping everyone get to know each other better. This activity was a great way to build connections and gain a deeper understanding of each other.

Feedback from New MOT Coaches

Some of the new MOT Coaches shared what they gained from the training:

  • “The Life Shield Activity helped me reflect on who I am and what I want in life. It was amazing to learn what other MOT Coaches value and dream about.”
  • “I learned to let go of the past and move forward.”
  • “The training has helped me communicate better. I now see the person as a whole, by having background understanding, not just the problem they face.”
  • “This training boosted my confidence and made me want to help others by showing the courage to care.”
  • “I am excited to be a MOT Coach and to help young people in my community.”

Now fully trained, these MOT Coaches are ready to lead MOT Sessions at their schools, using the tools and different methods provided through the training to support and inspire young people.
